Perspective
First word: The big picture

Globalization was the buzzword bandied about by designers and suppliers at the recent HOTEC Design conference held last month at the Chateau Elan Winery & Resort in Braselton, Ga. Many of the designers in attendance might not currently be working on projects outside of the U.S. but they recognized the great opportunities available to them in Europe, South America, Asia and the Middle East.

Wimberly Allison Tong & Goo recently named Lawrence M. Rocha the chairman of destination design. Rocha was originally elected to WATG's board of directors in 2002, serving as corporate secretary the last three years. Rocha also will be the firm's senior v.p. and chief information officer.
just the facts: Movin' on up
Construction pipelines in major markets are growing. Significantly, seven hotels with more than 1,000 rooms each were included in the pipeline in the first quarter of 2008, four of which were removed from the pipeline in years past and have since been reactivated. Of those seven, three are casino projects, while another is a 3,500-room Marriott in Las Vegas.

Spa industry veteran DIANE TRIESTE is teaming up with Group West Companies PLLC to form Strategic Spa Solutions. This new company will offer integrated solutions in spa planning, design and development, operations and management, and training and education. Trieste has held management positions with Canyon Ranch Health Resorts and Cortiva Education.

Advancements in hotel technology were on display at the annual Hospitality Industry Technology Exposition and Conference, held in Austin, Texas in early June. GUESTROOM 2010 (to be called G2X going forward) is a model hotel room that exhibits emerging technologies.

While many industries are in the midst of an economic downturn, the beach resort business keeps finding new ways to expand?more buildings, more amenities and more luxury.
First looks: Design & development
To mix Eastern and Western culture, Chicago's First Hospitality Group and Haylock Design as well as C&A Group, with offices in Beijing, Shanghai and Hong Kong, have joined forces to create The Grand Imperial Hotel. The project will break ground in September, with an anticipated opening in March 2010.
